Identifying Bullying

Playful teasing is fine if it’s controlled, but when it becomes hurtful, unkind, and constant, it becomes bullying and needs to stop.

Bullying can be physical, verbal, or psychological. It can be hitting, shoving, name-calling, threats, mocking, stealing lunch money and destroying possessions. Some kids bully by spreading rumors. Others use social media.

Why Kids Bully

People bully for a various reasons. Sometimes they pick on kids because they need a victim to pick on in order to feel more important, popular or in control.

In some cases, kids torment others because that's the way they are or have been treated.

They may think their behavior is normal because they come from families where everyone shouts or calls each other names.

What is Bullying

Bullying can be:

  • Being called names

  • Being put down or humiliated

  • Being teased

  • Being pushed, hit, kicked or physically hurt

  • Having money and other possessions taken or damaged

  • Having rumours spread about you

  • Being ignored and left out

  • Being threatened

These things can happen at school or at home, but they can also happen online on social networks.

A bully can turn a break time into a nightmare for others. Bullying can, in extreme situations, involve violent threats, property damage, or someone getting seriously hurt, and can result in suicide.

Signs of Bullying

The victim may start acting differently, seem anxious, not eat, sleep well, or do the things they usually enjoy. The also may start to avoid certain situations like taking the bus to school in order to avoid a bully or finding ways to not go to school at all.

If your child is being bullied you need to act to help stop it. Even if bullying isn't an issue in your home at the moment, it's important to discuss it with your kids so that they will be prepared for it if it does happen.
